Israel Stone Trade 2006

Turnover value represents higher quantities

Globalization has finally contributed to a regular pattern for the stone industry in Israel. Traditional sources and targets alike have changed. The turnover value represents higher quantities, at the same time reflecting improved product qualities due to new technologies.

Imports

Imports of dimension stone which peaked to a value of US$ 67 millions in 1996 have been steeply dropped to $49 million in 2003 to continue on that level to $48 million in 2006. This drop in imports was due to slowing down in building activities in that period and to the increased use of local stone resources, notably from Ramon in the Negev.

Lately deep excavations for underground parking in Jerusalem provide a renewed source for "Jerusalem Stone". Urban quarrying is now considered feasible, notwithstanding confined working space, civic objections and legislative restrictions, all being overcome by timely planning and strict supervision.

For the first time since Israel was established in the late forties, the historically leading imports from Italy $43 million in 1996 and dipping to £8 million in 2003 are been reduced to a steady $5 million in 2006. In contrast imports from Turkey remained steady since 2003 at $23 million.

Major import values (in 1000 US$) for custom chapter 6802

Turkey 23,644.345
China 7,892.275
Italy 4,778.597
Spain 4,174.288
Egypt 3,278.898
India 955.392

Smaller imports with values over $100,000 worth were made, in descending order from Portugal, Greece, Jordan, Belgium, Germany, France. Considering the many new public and institutional constructions in the pipeline, increase in stone imports is to be expected.

Exports

Total exports have now reached a value of US$ 65 million of which the USA accounts for $ 28 million, followed by China with $3 million. Smaller imports of values in descending order of $1 million and $200,000, Canada, Norway, Turkey, Switzerland, Japan, Cayman, Trinidad and Holland.
